Current Trends in Linguistic Internet Research

4-6 October 2004, University of Hanover

in deutscher Sprache

Initial statement and call for papers

This symposium will provide a forum for the discussion of current research on computer-mediated communication (CMC) from a linguistic point of view, with an emphasis on sociolinguistic, pragmatic and discourse-analytic approaches. It will explore two major aspects of CMC:

  • Language variation and change in and through CMC: Possible topics may include the structural and pragmatic effects of technical constraints; relations between language variation and social appropriations of CMC; ethnography of writing in particular online communities; and the role of language variation in strategies of online interaction.

  • CMC and the evolution of public discourse: Possible topics include the multimodality of online texts; participant resources of "identity design" in forums and other arenas; relations between web design and information structuring, e.g. in news discourse; and the development of alternative public spheres on the Web, e.g. amateur publishing, weblogs, and indymedia.

The symposium will include two plenary lectures by leading scholars in the field. Presentations of e-learning projects and a panel discussion are planned for 6 October in co-operation with the "Mediendidaktisches Kolloquium", which will be held at Hanover University from 6-8 October 2004.

Languages of the symposium are English and German.
