Inflektive and Inflektiv-Constructions

(si) *knuddel* and *ganzdollknuddel* are phenomena of the online-communication which have a special position in the German language. They are predicates that are independent of the complex sentence, moreover, they are non-finite and un-inflectional. Concerning finite verb-forms one can state that independent predicates principally occur in connection with imperatives (Schweigt!). Infinite forms (infinitives, participle I and II) also show corresponding predicates: These are predominant in dialogic adjacency pairs ("Lachend ging er zur Gerichtsverhandlung." – "Lachend?") or in root infinitives (in this context they mainly occur in children's language: ([Das] haben!).

In online-communication, mostly in chats, these independent predicates occur as well - but in this context they present a more or less new form (see bellow). For these verb-stems - except for those of online-communication - Teuber (1998) introduced the term "Inflektive". Schlobinski (2001) explicated them by differentiating between "simple" Inflektiven and "Inflektiv-Konstruktionen" (un-inflectional constructions). Examples for the former are:

  • knuddel (verb-stem)
  • raetselraetsel (reduplication of the verb-stem)
  • dahinschweb (particle of the verb + verb-stem)

klappeaufreissundhandvorhalt, in contrast, is grouped as Inflektiv-Konstruktionen. In this context this principally makes sense because not only verb-particles, but also adverbs and nouns etc. are added, so that one can speak of an incorporation. Actually, the prototype of incorporation consists of the composition of a nominal word-stem with a verb (z.B. Rad fahren -> radfahren).

Furthermore, Inflektive frequently occur in asterisks, as for example knuddel. However, these "stars" are not only used in connection with Inflektiven and Inflektiv-Konstruktionen, the use of asterisks in other contexts has increased continually. On the one hand, asterisks are used to express emphasis/stress and, on the other hand, they are used in statements that do resemble Inflektive, but cannot be grouped as Inflektive (immer noch ein wenig müde ist). Although the "Verbletztstellung" is evident, the verb is not inflected.
Further proofs as Nur ein Scherz cannot be assigned definitely, because the verb has been deleted. Possible statements for this would be nur ein Scherz [gewesen sei] as well as [war] nur ein Scherz.
